The Circle Game, by Tom Rush, is a concept album that traces the arc of a romantic relationship through its ten carefully sequenced tracks, blending folk with subtle orchestral arrangements. A unique aspect is its role in introducing emerging songwriters, featuring the first recordings of three songs by Joni Mitchell—including Tin Angel, Urge for Going, and the title track—as well as early compositions by James Taylor and Jackson Browne's debut recorded song Shadow Dream Song. Historically significant, the album helped catalyze the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s by spotlighting these then-little-known talents and bridging traditional folk with contemporary personal expression. Fan favorites include Rush's haunting original No Regrets, which became a much-covered folk standard, the melancholic Urge for Going, and the reflective title track The Circle Game. The album also includes Rush's instrumental Rockport Sunday and features cover photography by Linda Eastman, later known as Linda McCartney.
